FOR ENGINEERING DESIGNERS

Specify independent verification in your BESS design packages.

IPMVP covers lighting, HVAC, and renewable generation. It does not cover battery storage. SG-MV-001 is a published, citeable verification methodology that you can reference in specifications, commissioning requirements, and performance guarantees.

There is no M&V standard for battery storage.

IPMVP Options A-D address lighting retrofits, HVAC upgrades, and renewable generation. None address electrochemical storage. DNV's 2024 Battery Performance Scorecard confirms there is no accepted standard for measuring BESS degradation in the field. Every lender, insurer, and IE firm improvises.

IPMVP Options for BESS
Options A-D cover lighting, HVAC, envelope, and generation. Storage is out of scope. No option addresses state-of-health, cycle counting, or capacity fade verification.
67%
BESS Projects Underperform Warranty
DNV reports two-thirds of surveyed BESS assets show degradation exceeding OEM warranty curves within the first three years. No standard exists to measure this independently.
$0
Recoverable Without Evidence
Warranty claims require independent measurement against a published standard. Without one, disputes default to the OEM's own BMS data. Engineers cannot specify what does not exist.

SG-MV-001: BESS Performance Verification Standard

A published methodology covering degradation curves, capacity verification, revenue verification, availability scoring, warranty compliance assessment, and remaining economic life estimation. Each check is documented, reproducible, and reviewable by any IE firm.

CHECK 01
Meter-BMS Energy Reconciliation
Cross-reference utility revenue-grade meter (IEC 61000-4-30 Class A) against BMS-reported energy totals. Flag discrepancies exceeding measurement uncertainty bounds.
CHECK 02
Round-Trip Efficiency Validation
Compute cycle-level RTE from grid meter data. Compare against nameplate and OEM degradation model. Detect efficiency losses not attributable to normal aging.
CHECK 03
Capacity Fade Trending
Extract usable capacity from full charge-discharge cycles. Fit degradation curve. Compare observed fade rate against warranty curve and electrochemical model bounds.
CHECK 04
Thermal Excursion Detection
Identify cell temperature events outside OEM-specified operating envelope. Correlate thermal excursions with capacity fade anomalies and warranty exclusion thresholds.
CHECK 05
Availability and Curtailment Scoring
Calculate asset availability from dispatch signal vs. actual response. Decompose downtime into scheduled maintenance, forced outage, and curtailment categories.
CHECK 06
Revenue Metering Verification
Reconcile settlement-quality meter data against ISO market settlement statements. Quantify revenue leakage from metering errors, clipping, and registration gaps.
CHECK 07
Cycle Counting and Depth Analysis
Rainflow cycle count from time-series SOC data. Map actual cycling regime against warranty-specified cycle limits (depth, rate, temperature).
CHECK 08
Response Time Compliance
Measure ramp rate and dispatch latency against grid code and PPA requirements. Verify frequency response within contracted parameters (e.g., 200ms for FFR).
CHECK 09
Warranty Compliance Assessment
Map observed operating conditions against warranty terms. Identify events that may trigger exclusions or accelerate warranty degradation allowances.
CHECK 10
Remaining Economic Life Estimation
Project remaining usable capacity and revenue-generating life from observed degradation trajectory. Provide confidence intervals for asset valuation models.

CSI DIVISION 26
Electrical Specification Template
Pre-drafted specification language for Section 26 48 00 (Energy Storage Systems). Insert directly into your spec package. Covers verification scope, data access requirements, reporting cadence, and acceptance criteria referencing SG-MV-001.
METHODOLOGY DOCUMENT
SG-MV-001 Standard Reference
Cite a specific document number in your specifications. SG-MV-001 defines the 10-check pipeline, measurement requirements, uncertainty analysis methods, and reporting formats. Version-controlled and publicly available.

Verification Requirements
Baseline verification requirements for substantial completion. Define what "verified capacity" means at commissioning using dual-telemetry measurement against SG-MV-001 Checks 01-04 as acceptance criteria.
ONGOING MONITORING
Performance Monitoring Specification
Specify continuous third-party performance monitoring as an O&M requirement. Monthly, quarterly, and annual reporting cadence. Degradation trending against warranty curves. Automated anomaly detection and flagging.
